On a perfect Michigan Autumn night, the Goodrich Martians JV football team traveled to Holly to take on the Bronchos. The Martians came in winning 7 straight games, and were looking to put an exclamation point on a great season, but started sluggish as neither team managed any sustained drive in the 1st Quarter. Finally, on there 5th possision of the game, the Martians were able to put together some momentum and took the lead they would never relinsquish on a 1-yard TD plunge from Clayton Burnett. Shut down defense has been a strength all year, and forcing another 3 and out, allowed the Martians to continue to build the lead late in the 2nd quarter as Colton Leedom found Joey Belanger who did the rest, and bulldozed into the end zone on a 17-yard touchdown reception, giving the Martians a 12-0 lead at the break.
The defenese really cranked up the pressure in the 2nd half, and after Zack Lagat chased the quarterback down for a sack, the Martian offense marched 70 yards to score. The key play was a 4th down and 11 conversion in which Leedom threw a dart to a falling Gavin Hart who managed to hang on for a 28- yard gain to the 1 yard line and Burnett finished the drive from there. Leedom found Caden Kolanowski in the back of the end zone on the 2 point attempt and the Martians led 20-0. Freshman Brady Benson and Logan Durant combined on a strip sack of the quarterback and fumble recovery on the next series. The offense finished a 4th consectutive drive into the end zone on a 5-yard scamper by Jace Simerson and Cam Macklem punched in the 2-point conversion in what would prove to be the final score of 28-0.
Offensively Leedom managed to complete 7 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, while chipping in 84 yards rushing on another 7 attempts. Burnett led the ground attack rushing 14 times for 109 yards and the 2 touchdowns. Simerson punched in the score along with 20 yards rushing. Hart hauled in 3 passes for 72 yards, and Belanger finished with the 17 yard touchdown catch. On the defensive side of the ball, Macklem was a monster with 14 tackles, Kolanowski had 9 and an interception, Burnett 8, Eli Koester 7, and Simerson had 6 along with an interception. Zack Lagat had 2 sacks, Benson had the fumble forcing sack along with 4 tackles, while Gavin Wallace managed to record 3 tackles on Kickoff Coverage.
As a team, the Martians wrap up the season at 8-1. The sophomore class managed to win an incredible 16 games in two years, and leave behind a 8-game winning streak for the Freshmen and future Martians to build upon next year.
