On September 26th, the Goodrich Martians JV Football team traveled to Brandon to take on the Blackhawks in a rivalry matchup. Looking to continue there early season success the Martians were riding a 3 game win streak and a lot of confidence and it showed early and often. Despite a quick turnover on offense, the defense stepped up and delivered big hits in the back field from the first snap. To start the scoring the Martians ended a short 35 yard drive on a TD Run by Jace Simerson from 4 yards out. Pressure and a hit by Logan Durant on the next drive, forced a fumble that was scooped up and taken to the house by Eli Koester from 14 yards out and the Martians were ahead 13-0. Another turnover and a very short field led to a Clayton Burnett TD plunge from a yard out. Showing power on both sides of the line of scrimmage, Burnett forced another Blackhawk fumble and this time Gavin Hart was in the perfect position to scoop and score from 15 yards away and suddenly it was 27-0 faster then the short bus ride over.

The 2nd quarter was more of the same for the entire swarming Martian defense. Pressure and big hits led to another short field for the offense. Goodrich was able to march 42 yards behind the running of Simerson and Burnett and finished the drive behind the offensive lines push on a 1 yard TD by Burnett. The next series ended in no positive push by the Blackhawks and a punt. With little time left on the first half clock the Martians imposed there will and drove 60 yards, with the exclamation point coming on a tough 16 yard TD scamper by Cam Macklem and the halftime score stood at 41-0.

The second half featured a running clock and an oppurtunity to allow the entire team to enjoy in the success of the night. Defense is a group of individuals who attack there responbilities on each play for the overall success of the team, and most assignments were met with great effort on this night. The Blackhawks would manage a late score, to avoid the shutout at 41-6, but on the evening they were held to less then 50 yards of total offense. Durant (2 sacks), Koester, Zack Lagat, and Joey Belanger led a barrage of defenders who made plays behind the line of scrimmage all night long. No fewer then 12 plays ended behind the original line of scrimmage. The Martians also won the turnover battle including the three fumbles and also an interception by Owen Deciechi. Offensively the running game was led by Burnetts 10-69 yards and 2 Tds, Simerson going 7-52 and a TD, and a 6-26 effort by Brady Benson. Caden Kolanowski was 5/6 on Extra Point Attempts on the night.

UP NEXT: The Goodrich Martians (4-1) put a 4 game winning streak on the line, in the last HOME GAME of the season versus Lake Fenton on October 3rd.
